Sustainability

At Knowsley, we’re committed to behaviour change and reducing the negative impact on the environment. We’re always looking for ways to change how we do things to become a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly day out. We believe that connecting communities with the natural world is fundamental to protecting biodiversity and habitats for the benefit of future generations.

Single-use plastic

We’ve waved goodbye to single-use plastics from our hot food packaging, cutlery and drinks bottles. We go to great lengths to provide fresh, home-cooked food in our restaurant. But if a busy day at the Safari means you want to grab and go, we serve our delicious take-outs in biodegradable cartons. Changing behaviour can be thirsty work. However, to avoid unnecessary plastic pollution finding its way into the ocean, we don’t stock drink bottles. You’ll see a wide variety of refreshments – but not a plastic bottle in sight!

We’re also changing behaviours by:

- Raising awareness of the issue amongst our guests

- Encouraging guests to take action on these issues at home

- Finding ways to be more energy efficient

- Improving the ways that we use water

- Aiming for zero waste to landfill

At Knowsley, we go out of our way to make sure we leave as small a footprint on the environment as possible. These are just some of the ideas that are helping to keep us green: Installing water reduction bags in our toilet cisterns has saved 1 litre of water per toilet, per flush. That’s a reduction of over 250,000 litres of water last year alone! Waste that can’t be recycled goes to waste for energy. Every tonne of waste produces enough electricity to power an average U.K. home for 2 months. Each year, by taking the Baboon Bus, our guests saved 3.21 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere.
