Disabled Access & Facilities at Knowsley Safari

We have made it our mission to ensure that Knowsley Safari is accessible for everyone. Whether you have a wheelchair, pushchair or are visiting with somebody who has additional needs, we have done all we can to make sure that everyone is catered for and everyone can enjoy the safari.

Knowsley Safari is an ideal day out for those in wheelchairs or with pushchairs due to our level footpaths. However, we also have provisions in place to support those with additional needs with our Sunflower Lanyards, so assistance is always available for those who need it.

With short displays and talks, plenty of places for rest and respite and the option of taking the Safari Drive as many times as you’d like, there are lots of opportunities to take some downtime.

You can read our full accessibility statement here.

Essential Companion Tickets

We are proud to partner with Nimbus Disability, operators of the Access Card scheme, who process all ‘essential companion’ (previously ‘Carer’) eligibility. You will now need to apply online for an Access Card through Nimbus Disability, at least 7 days before visiting.  We are unable to accept any same-day applications.

Disabled Parking

If you are a blue badge holder, we have a dedicated parking area for those with disabilities. Disabled parking bays are adjacent to the entrance, next to the coach park. You can also access the walk-around entrance with ease as there is no kerb between the parking bays and the entrance.

Wheelchair / pushchair friendly entrance

When you arrive, access to the Foot Safari is easy. The walk-around entrance is on one level, with ramped access at all kerbs, making it easy to access the entrance with a pram or wheelchair.

If you’d rather not bring your own, we have wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility scooters available to hire from the information centre. Take a look at our price list for 1-day hire below

Single Stroller £8.00 (£20.00 deposit)

Double Stroller £12.00 (£20.00 deposit)

Wheelchair £5.00 (£20.00 deposit)

Mobility Scooter £20.00 (£50.00 deposit)

Adult changing facilities

We have two designated adult changing rooms with a hoist, these are located in the main toilet block by our disabled parking and next to the outdoor food court.

Accessible toilet and baby changing facilities

Every toilet block in the safari has accessible toilets and baby-changing facilities.

Assistance dogs

Assistance Dogs, including Guide Dogs and Hearing Dogs, are welcome to accompany their owners in some areas of the Foot Safari. Unfortunately, we cannot allow Assistance Dogs access to the animal areas on the Foot Safari or Safari Drive for safety reasons. We can, however, provide a water bowl for Assistance Dogs when they are accompanying you on-site.

1:1 carers can enter the park for free with a paying park guest and valid documentation. Carers can take the place of Assistance Dogs and accompany those who require assistance in the areas where dogs are not permitted.

We do provide basic accommodation for your dog should you wish to bring them on your trip. A £10.00 refundable padlock is available at reception on arrival. Our kennels provide basic accommodation for your pet. Please feel free to bring with you any items that will make your pet as comfortable as possible.

We have baby changing facilities available in all of our toilets, as well as a dedicated baby changing room. We offer facilities to warm baby bottles or baby food for our visitors. For those who choose to eat in the cafe, we aim to offer a range of healthy meals and snacks for children.

Viewing areas

All of the animal viewing areas along our Foot Safari are accessible by wheelchairs and pushchairs. Wheelchair spaces are available for the Sea Lion Display. However, pushchairs and prams are not permitted in the Sea Lion Auditorium, but you can leave them in the designated pram park outside.

Hidden Disabilities

We know that it’s not always obvious who needs additional assistance and support. That’s why we have now introduced Sunflower Lanyards at the Safari. The Sunflower is a discreet signal to our members of staff that the wearer has a hidden disability and may require some additional assistance. If our staff can see somebody wearing a Sunflower pin badge, lapel ribbon or lanyard, we’ll simply ask if you need a hand with anything and provide support where needed.

Equatorial Express and Baboon Bus

There is a separate carriage available especially for wheelchair users on the Equatorial Express railway. If you would prefer to travel on our Baboon Bus around the Safari Drive and have a wheelchair user in your party, please contact us prior to booking so we can advise which buses can accommodate your needs.

We do not allow any pets in any area of the safari park, with the exception of Assistance Dogs in certain areas. This is to ensure the safety of our animals and yours. There is, however, on-site accommodation for dogs away from the main animal enclosures.

You can hire a padlock for our kennels from reception on arrival with a £10.00, refundable, deposit. Our kennels provide basic accommodation for your pet and drinking water is available. However, we do not provide water bowls or blankets so please feel free to bring along any items that will make your pet as comfortable as possible.
