This PhD focuses on creating a framework that helps zoos and safari parks achieve ‘zero carbon at zero cost’. In this era of extreme environmental awareness, zoological collections like Knowsley have an extraordinary opportunity to engage the public in the complex dialogue surrounding sustainability. Leading by example is one important way of achieving this. However, activity undertaken by zoos and safari parks spans across many sectors, including hospitality, conservation, amusements and education, which can present a significant challenge when attempting to operate with sustainability in mind. The framework and decision-making model being developed by this PhD should help making sustainable decisions much easier.
