Head to Bear Country This Easter

Join us on an extraordinary adventure as we introduce the newest members of our safari family - two Andean bears.

Adventure into Bear Country, home to Bahia and Chui, from Good Friday, March 29th, for an exciting family day out during the school holidays and beyond.

As you step into Bear Country, you'll instantly notice the difference between the breeding pair. Male, Chui, hits the scales at 140kg, making him twice the weight and size of Bahia, who weighs a modest 69kg.

The bears’ new habitat has platforms for them to play and feed on, which they enjoy climbing – they’re also loving chomping on bamboo sticks filled with honey and peanut butter and cracking open coconuts! And, after a busy day, Bahia and Chui can recharge in their house with wood wool-filled nest boxes.

The arrival of Bahia and Chui also marks the start of our new conservation campaign in partnership with the Spectacled Bear Conservation Society.

Mostly found in South America’s high-elevation humid forests including Peru and Bolivia, Andean Bears - also known as Spectacled Bears due to their light brown facial markings - are unfortunately at risk of extinction and listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with potentially as few as 2,500 mature individuals remaining. The bears are under threat from habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict, including poaching.

We are hopeful that our new conservation campaign, which launches to coincide with Bahia and Chui’s arrival, will help conserve and protect the future of these shy species bears providing support such as the provision of equipment and educational materials.
