Knowsley Hall Public Opening
From Monday 10th to Friday 14th October; The Knowsley Hall Public Opening 2016
This year the public opening centres around portraiture in Britain and Europe C.1640-1800
Knowsley Hall is opening its doors to the public for the annual open week, from Monday 10th October to Friday 14th October 2016..
The tour will feature around fifteen rarely seen oil portraits including some of the finest oil paintings from the Derby Collection. Among the outstanding masterpieces of portraiture produced during the Baroque and Enlightenment periods is The Old Beggarman by Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), the Neapolitan-based Spaniard. Also included is The Portrait of a Young Man (possibly the Artist’s Son) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), the Dutch-trained artist, who worked in England with such success. Other less well known portraitists represented in the display are Mary Beale, Jan Wyck, James Maubert and Charles Jervas. Among the sitters in the portraits on show are Charles I, Charles II, William III and the poet John Dryden
