Do you know anyone between 15 and 18 years old looking to work with animals or in conservation? Knowsley Academy has been developed for those serious about a career working as a vet, zoologist, keeper or conservationist.

The intensive 5 day course covers practical husbandry experience with a range of animals which may include antelope, reptiles, carnivores and giraffe. Tasks vary but can include: mucking out, preparing food, making enrichment or watching a training session.

There are also theory sessions on diet, anatomy and behaviour and workshops are also help on topical issues within the industry.

There will also be a question and answer session focusing on jobs in the industry with animal professionals for parents and students, plus assistance on writing personal statements and interview technique.

We will work with those on the course to develop a portfolio to provide evidence of work and successful completion of the course. Candidates will receive a certificate, personal reference statement and USB of images from their time on the course.

Participants will need to be hard working and committed to both practical and theoretical tasks. We will be working outside in all weather conditions just as our vets, keepers and students do. The course is a maximum of 12 participants; students will be working with the education team and professionals in the industry so working as a team is essential.

Please note due to the unpredictable nature of working with animal we reserve the right to add, change or replace elements of the program without prior notice or explanation.

Knowsley Academy has limited places on each course so booking early is advised.

Our 15 year old daughter has thoroughly enjoyed her 5 days at Knowsley Safari Park. She has been engaged the whole time and really learnt a lot. Discussion about various topics – i.e. conservation and keeping animals in captivity have been discussed and she has thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. An experience we would recommend to any parent whose child is interested in a career with animals. 5*. Great to have photos for Eleanor to remember her experience and useful pointers for a future in working with animals.

My daughter attended the Knowsley Academy in April and it was well worth the money. Very well organised with the right balance of education and hands on experience. Excellent information regarding possible careers in the future. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who has a child thinking of a career working with animals.

I completed the academy in April this year. Not only did I learn a huge amount about exotic animals, it’s been a key part of my work experience. As I am currently applying to veterinary medicine at university, it’s been an invaluable addition to my application
