At this time of year our Pere David deer are gearing up for the summer breeding season. They’ve spent all winter preparing for it, growing impressive antlers, warming up their vocal chords and flexing their strong neck muscles in preparation for the rut! Up on the safari drive, you’ll start to see the males sizing each other up and practicing their sparring ahead of the main event – the rut!
The Rut Watch is a fantastic opportunity for you to experience this rarely seen natural behaviour up close. With a limited number of places available, this is an extremely exclusive opportunity to see this majestic animal’s behaviour at its peak. This event takes place after the safari drive closes, so it’ll just be the group, the Pere David and our expert animal keepers providing you all the information you need to understand the wonders of this animal that is now extinct in the wild.
Expect to see the mature stags with the largest antlers utilisng their bulk and impressive headwear to intimidate the competition, males calling out in competition to be the loudest, and more. All you need to do now is book your seat!
– No unaccompanied under 18s
– £5 ticket price includes refreshments
What You’ll Be Doing
The evening will start at 6.30pm, where visitors will be directed to the Safari School from the entrance gates upon arrival. There will be a short 15 minute talk outlining the plan for the event as well as what behaviours you might want to look out for. From the school, guests will continue up onto the section for an hour of observing these incredible and rare behaviours.
What To Wear
We would advise guests to wear sensible shoes and comfortable clothes. The majority of the evening will take place on the drive, however, you may want to bring a light waterproof jacket should the weather turn.
