Native Bats

Over the past century, UK bat populations have declined due to human disturbance, lack of food sources, and habitat loss. Using a range of the latest technology and equipment, and with assistance from the Merseyside & West Lancashire Bat Group, we have discovered several nationally important species live within the Knowsley Estate.

Alongside regular bat population monitoring we also participate in annual roost, field and waterway surveys as part of the National Bat Monitoring Programme run by the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT). We are also conducting an ongoing research project looking at the effect of animal biomass on bat abundance. Read more about it here.

To hear about opportunities to get involved with bat surveys at Knowsley, please join the Merseyside & West Lancashire Bat Group. For more information on joining click here
