We are delighted to have recently welcomed two young lionesses from Whipsnade Zoo.
Malaika and Kibibi are sisters who were born in January 2025.
Their arrival marks an exciting new chapter for the Northern Lion European Endangered Species Programme (EEP). We hope these sisters will form the foundation of a future breeding pride here at Knowsley Safari, helping to support a sustainable and genetically diverse captive population of this iconic species
Despite their fearsome reputation, lions, particularly young individuals such as Malaika and Kibibi, can be surprisingly timid and easily startled. As they settle into their new home over the coming weeks, visitors may notice them appearing slightly nervous, patrolling the boundaries of their habitat, or even choosing to stay out of sight while they become familiar with their surroundings.
Even within the first few days of their arrival, we have already seen their confidence begin to grow as they explore their new environment. However, it may take several weeks before they are fully settled.
During this important adjustment period, our team of dedicated animal keepers is working closely with Malaika and Kibibi to build trust and develop a positive relationship. This foundation will play a vital role in their future training, day-to-day care, overall wellbeing, and long-term welfare here at Knowsley Safari.
During this important adjustment period, they have access to both a large outdoor paddock and their indoor house, allowing them to choose where they feel most comfortable. Similarly, Savannah, our resident lioness, currently has access to her own paddock and indoor accommodation while she adjusts to the presence of the new arrivals. None of our lions will be out in the main reserve at the moment. We thank our visitors for their understanding during their settling in period.
