We’ve been keeping a little secret...
There’s some extra stomping going on at Knowsley Safari! Just two months after welcoming little Kamari, we’re thrilled to announce the arrival of a brand-new Southern White Rhino calf. Meet Stanley, the latest member of our rhino crash.
Stanley is named in honour of the historic Stanley family, the Earls of Derby, whose legacy is deeply woven into Knowsley Estate, home of the Safari.
He joins a ten-strong rhino crash, one of the largest in the UK, including Kamari, Bindi (born February 2024), and Amara (born October 2022). Thanks to our dedicated ungulate keepers and the 550-acre habitats we provide, these rhinos are thriving, and each birth is a big win for conservation.
Southern White Rhinos are classed as Near Threatened, so every new arrival is an important step in protecting the species, especially when you consider that the Northern White Rhino is now functionally extinct, with only two females left in the world.
Lindsay Banks, our ungulates team manager, says:
"We’re over the moon to welcome Stanley. He’s bonding beautifully with mum, Meru, and will be gradually introduced to the rest of the crash. Visitors will soon be able to spot him on the Safari Drive! Naming him after the Stanley family is a lovely nod to the history of Knowsley Estate and our ongoing commitment to wildlife."
Stanley will join start to explore Safari Drive when the weather is better. Come and see him and the rest of the crash in action soon.
