We’ve got some very special news to share from the Safari...
Meet Kamari, our adorable seven-week-old Southern White Rhino calf, who was born on 20 November 2025 to second-time mum Bayami. Her name means moonlight in Swahili – and we think it suits her perfectly.
Kamari has had a brilliant start to life and is already showing off a confident, cheeky personality. Weighing an estimated 40–60kg at birth, she’s doing everything a healthy rhino calf should be; walking confidently, feeding well from mum, and enjoying short bursts of energy where she charges around her pen before curling up for a nap. Bayami has taken to motherhood beautifully too, staying close by and keeping a watchful eye as Kamari explores her surroundings.
This little one is the second calf for dad Pembe, who is 16 years old. Kamari also joins an exciting chapter in Knowsley Safari’s rhino story as she follows Bindi, born in February 2024, and Amara, born in October 2022. That means we’ve welcomed three Southern White Rhino calves in just five years, reinforcing our role in the conservation of this near-threatened species.
Southern White Rhinos are native to South Africa and continue to face serious threats in the wild, particularly from poaching. Every birth is an important step forward for the species, helping to safeguard their future.
At the moment, Kamari isn’t visible on the Safari Drive. With the colder, wetter weather, she’s spending most of her time behind the scenes where she can stay warm and safe. On dry, milder days, visitors might be lucky enough to spot her and Bayami in their outdoor yards. For now, Kamari is busy greeting her keepers, practising mock charges, and proving she’s got a bold personality already.
In the video below, Lindsay Banks, Ungulates Team Manager, shares what it’s been like welcoming Kamari to the crash and why each rhino birth is so important for conservation.
Beyond our own rhinos, we’re proud to support Helping Rhinos, a charity working on the frontline to protect rhinos and their habitats in the wild. Through this partnership, we contribute to projects tackling poaching and habitat loss across the globe.
Our rhino crash benefits from two expansive paddocks spanning 60 acres, giving the herd space to thrive, socialise and breed successfully. It’s this environment, combined with dedicated keeper care, that helps make Knowsley Safari a key contributor to Southern White Rhino conservation.
We can’t wait to watch Kamari grow, and we’ll be sure to share updates as she continues her journey
