Native bird champion Daniel Canning met up with on site wildlife photography experts Wild Arena to learn more about the art of capturing birds on camera!

Recently, I was invited to go around the Safari Drive with the photographer from Wild Arena.  I was met by Naomi from Knowsley Safari and we were soon joined by Janet from Wild Arena.

We set off early, before the park opened to the public.  We went in Wild Arena’s truck and had the safari drive to ourselves!

When we set off on the drive, our first spot by the first lake/pond was Barnacle Geese, Oystercatchers and plenty of Pied Wagtails. Janet gave me lots of advice on how to move from using the camera on the auto setting, to changing settings such as exposure.

The sky looked heavy, but we carried on.  On our way around we saw a few Treecreepers, and by the Rhino and Zebra, we spotted Swallows, Swifts, a Buzzard, Red-Legged Partridges and a male Wheatear.

When we drove by the Baboons, Janet pointed out a Lapwing nest right by the side of the road. The plan had been to go and take some photos along the Wild Trail after the safari drive, but when we got back to the car park, the heavens opened, and there was a massive downpour of rain. We decided not to go down to the Wild Trail, as it would be too muddy, and we didn’t particularly want to get soakinga wet!

It was a really enjoyable morning and I’m very grateful to Janet and the team from Knowsley Safari for the great opportunity.
