BackyardSafari Title

Here at Knowsley Safari, we have all kinds of incredible animals! But did you know that some of the weirdest and wildest animals can be found right outside your door? Every day millions of amazing native British species are buzzing, bounding and burrowing around our homes and with Backyard Safari, we’re challenging you to spot them! Your garden is a habitat for all kinds of fantastic creatures just waiting to be revealed. You might even discover something you never expected. Newts, foxes, bats, falcons and more are living in and around gardens across the country – so we’re calling on all budding adventurers to get outside and tell us what’s living in theirs!

You could think of the backyard as an arena for the circle of life – a drama unfolding right under our noses, and even our feet.

“Our humble gardens provide homes for thousands of insects, birds and mammals, who are working away right under our noses,” Nikki Burton Mallott, Knowsley Safari’s learning and discovery manager says, “Few people realise how vital wildlife is to our existence, but their work has a very real effect on our lives.”

Win, win, win!

Backyard Safari is challenging children aged between 5 – 11-years-old to explore their garden habitats and share with us what kinds of different creatures you find! You can share your truly wild snapshots with us via our Facebook page or on Twitter using #BackyardSafari.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! If you capture a picture that’s really special, you can enter our Backyard Safari competition in partnership with Manchester Evening News and Liverpool Echo, where one lucky winner and nine of their friends will be treated to a celebration at the parks brand new Party Rooms, a minibus safari tour, lunch, sea lion display, as well as amusement wristbands getting you unlimited access to all the park rides!

If you think you’ve got what it takes to explore the wild world of your garden, competition photos must be submitted at either the MEN or Liverpool Echo by 12pm on Monday, April 4 for consideration. Entries will be judged by Knowsley’s Learning & Discovery manager Nikki Burton Mallott, Wild Arena Photography as well as an MEN journalist.
