Daniel has been out and about at the park and this month he’s been putting his thoughts to autumn and what this means for the birds we see.

“Autumn migration is just beginning to die down but that doesn’t mean there are no rare birds in the UK! Autumn is the best time of year to go bird watching because a lot of migrating birds either get blown off course or grounded because of bad weather. That means rare birds pour into the country. I have experienced the excitement myself. When I was on holiday with my school, in Wales, I was lucky enough to see a Red-Breasted Flycatcher! In autumn basically anything can turn up anywhere! Always check your garden, local park and nearest wildlife reserve for unusual birds.

Make sure you always wrap up warm when bird watching in autumn and winter, and you have something to note down what you’ve seen. Also take a bird book to help you identify the things you can’t! If you have them, also take binoculars to get a better view of the birds. A camera is useful to take pictures of unusual and common birds alike.
