About Blesbok

These striking antelope are easy to spot with their bold white facial blaze (which gives them their name – “bles” means blaze in Afrikaans) and glossy reddish-brown coats. Native to the open grasslands of South Africa, blesbok are perfectly adapted for life on the plains, and now you can see them up close as part of our growing safari herd.

They’re a social species and usually found in herds. Watch them graze, rest and interact with one another throughout the day – they might look chilled, but they can sprint up to 43mph when needed!

That white blaze on their face isn’t just for show – it may help reduce glare from the sun on the open savannah.

Blesbok are herbivores, primarily grazers, and their diet consists almost entirely of grasses.

Blesbok are native to the open grasslands of Southern Africa, specifically South Africa.

Classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. They were once nearly extinct due to overhunting in the 19th century but have made a big comeback thanks to conservation.
