Hare we go again - 25/03/2009

With spring in the air Knowsley Safari Park visitors can now enjoy a range of native British wildlife as well as the attractions of more exotic specimens. For example this affectionate couple are part of a group - or drove - of hares currently sharing a paddock with Knowsley's wildebeest.

They seem to be getting on rather well, unlike many of their colleagues who are now heavily involved in the typical 'mad March hare' spring frenzy. This is when hares can be seen chasing round meadows and boxing - standing up and striking one another with their paws. For a long time this behavior was thought to be inter-male competition. In fact, it is usually an unreceptive female fighting off the attentions of an unwanted male.

The Knowsley estate is home to a wide variety of native wildlife. 10 species of waterfowl nest around it's lake, kestrels and buzzards can be spotted in the woodland and stoats, weasels, grey squirrels and red squirrels can also be seen by keen eyed visitors.

Safari Park General Manager, David Ross commented: "People obviously come to Knowsley to see our animals from all over the world. However, it's clear from talking to visitors that seeing an unusual British bird or animal can be one of the highlights of their day here."
